1982. The enfant terrible of television was born. Playful, provocative, risky and innovative, Channel 4 tore up the template for British TV over twenty years ago and has never looked back.
Now we want to repeat that feat with radio. On 5th June 2006 we launched a wide range of exclusive on demand shows, from the daily Channel 4 News Morning Report to Miquita Oliver’s Twisted Tens. Since then, we’ve had the pleasure of entertaining some great company on our shows – from Ricky Gervais to U2 to Jamie Oliver to Jon Snow. Our eclectic mix of programmes is currently accessible as downloads or streamed on-line from this website. We hope this is just the beginning……
Media Regulator, Ofcom, has invited bids for a new ‘commercial digital radio multiplex’ (that’s a range of stations on digital radio) and we are bidding to win these stations as part of a consortium called the 4Digital Group. It’s an important decision for Ofcom, and for anyone who listens to radio, because commercial radio in Britain is in decline and in need of a new lease of life. We want to reinvent radio for the 21st Century and we’ve got some ambitious plans to make this happen.
Ofcom are likely to make their decision in July. In the meantime, we’d love to hear what you think about our programmes and any ideas you have for what you think we should do that we’re not doing already. We want you to get involved, so visit our discussion boards or e-mail via the website and help us build the radio you want.
